i actually don't think the root of these types of banned words come from any Moderators. I actually don't like banning words other than those commonly misused for exclamation purpose. I'd like to think that FlyerTalk does have some sort of general level of public acceptance and while i can't speak for anyone else on FlyerTalk, i know i don't really comfortable when someone i meet in a very public place, let's say an airport immediately yells out the F and S words every third word from their mouth. Seems to me that thee are more common and acceptable ways to make a point about something.
As for the balling and ...... words. If I memory is worth anything ,these became banned because of the manner in which an individual on FlyerTalk decided to use the words over and over in a very grating manner. The words while having a different context in generations gone by, actually have a fairly new reputation. For instance, Nike sells ...... wrist bands which have some significance to forms of street basketball. So there is a common and acceptable use of some of these terms. But in this case, this member became so aggravating with their behavior in using that term (he/she did not use the term in a passing reference, rather they made the main topic of each and every post for a long time) that a large number of members became insulted and aggravated and as a result requested that the Moderators edit/ban the word.
So much of what happens on FT is the direct result of the actions of our members.
Hope this explains this action as i recall it.
