HP tried not only transcons from LAX but also SFO using A320. Didn't seem to work for them. Still, a smaller airline can make it work. Jet Blue does it out of OAK and LGB.
It had nothing to do with the aircraft type. It had to do with low loads on routes in which have massive competition.
