Unless the entire journey is on the same ticket (or a set of conjunction tickets), there will be multiple and separate contracts of carriage. In order for UA to become a forwarding/receiving carrier, there first needs to be a flight connection from/to an UA flight. With separate contracts of carriage there will be, by definition, no such connection.
Having said that, taking into the account the human/customer service factor, UA employees are likely to be more sympathetic to someone, who misses their flight, because of a delay of another UA flight (as opposed to a delay of an OAL flight).
