I think you're being a bit harsh on the OP and a bit over the top in regards to this.

The sale price is irrelevant to this whole discussion. The issue is this: the OP has a ticket from SFO to AKL and will happen to be in NYC prior to departure. He wants to figure out how to get to SFO and wants to do his best to ensure the fewest travel gitches possible.

IME, if you are connecting from one PNR on UA onto another and there is a misconnect, UA will accommodate you without penalty on the next available flight. To reduce your chances of this, I recommend that you give yourself as much leeway as possible in your flight selection.
