My elderly mother is looking to book a European/Mediterranean cruise with a girlfriend this fall. Mom has only cruised once with my Father on Holland America; friend has never cruised. Although Mom has travelled extensively with my Father, I don't consider her a 'savvy' traveller.... that was Dad's domain.

I was wondering if anyone can comment on the 'acceptability' of the more affordable NCL versus the more expensive Holland America line. We'd be looking for cleanliness, decent service from staff, lectures, on-board activities, dining experiences and so on.
