I'm no expert but here is my understanding.

Changes, when allowed, are are always free for 1K's.

Making the change before the first flight is no problem no matter what.

After the first flight if it's a *A award (any leg nonUA metal) it is "set in stone" (quote from a UA agent) and you can't make any changes.

If it's a UA metal only ticket then you can make the change in question. (assuming availability)
