I want to cancel the ticket and have it held as united credit. That is easy, but then they said once I reschedule the flight they will do a refund to the CC for the residual credit (which there will be since this is a expensive fare). Any idea on how I can retain as much of this fare as possible and do multiple bookings (for other people also would be nice)? Thanks!
Have you tried calling back? You could even try to go to the airport or the ticketing office to reschedule. It is easier to argue and convince in person than it is on phone. Or buy a more expensive non-refundable ticket, like in first class etc.
