Given your situation I'd suggest using the UA Customer Service counter outside the Customs Hall in the international terminal to inquire about standing by for the earlier flight, or asking about the status of your ticketed flight. Use the right-most exit and the UA counters, also where you'd hand your bag off for transfer to your domestic flight, are on the right, just outside the door.
