Aren't there two ways to earn status on AA?
One is by points, usually based on fares and actual mileage.

So, if you are flying on discount tickets, your actual mileage flown counts, but if you fly on full fare coach or first tickets, you will qualify based on points.

Then again, its late and I could be wrong.
