I'd standby on the earlier flight, as suggested, if clearing C/I in time. Often, if a checked bag is destined for an airport an earlier flight goes to, it'll go on that flight rather than your originally booked one. I've had this happen numerous times to me, even with no standby. No bag on the belt, but it's at the service office or set off to the side.
