During the day, bounce up and down the west coast. Then take a redeye to the east coast, arriving in the early morning (5-7a). See if you can add another segment on the east coast before taking a late-morning flight back west. Bounce up the west coast until you get back home.
Avoid DEN and ORD. Embrace SFO, IAD, SAN, LAX, and maybe even BOS or LAS if you can put them between a UA hub.
I've used this strategy dozens of times and never stayed in a hotel while on a MR (unless it was due to a VDB and the airline was paying
).
