TWA Suspends Acceptance Of Pets As Checked Baggage During The Summer Months

TWA SUSPENDS ACCEPTANCE OF PETS AS CHECKED BAGGAGE DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS
~ Pets still may travel as cargo except during hot weather; small pets may be carried in the aircraft cabin. ~

ST. LOUIS (June 1, 2000) – Effective immediately, and continuing through September 5, 2000, Trans World Airlines, Inc., will not accept pets as checked baggage.

TWA will continue to accept small pets for travel in the cabin in approved pet carriers. TWA will also continue to accept pets in appropriate travel containers for shipment as cargo provided that temperatures are not forecasted to exceed 85 degrees during the time of shipment.

Passengers who have already begun travel before the prohibition period with a pet as checked baggage will be permitted to complete their travel, provided the forecasted temperature is not more than 85 degrees at any point along their journey. Passengers who have made advance reservations for travel with pets during the summer may call 1-800-221-2000 to either rebook their travel or to have their tickets refunded without penalty.

"As is the case with everything we do at TWA, safety is the #1 concern. These sensible restrictions on handling of pets as cargo shipments only during the summer months will help us assure the safe and humane treatment of every pet that travels on TWA," said Mark Abels, TWA's vice president - corporate communications.

“Because TWA Cargo specializes in shipping packages rather than passengers, pets shipped as cargo receive more individual attention,” Abels said.

Pets accepted for travel in the aircraft cabin must be small enough to fit comfortably into a pet carrier that can be stowed under the passenger seat. TWA allows no more than one pet in first class and two pets in coach on any flight. Pet owners who wish to bring small pets into the cabin must make a reservation for the pet in advance. Passengers can call TWA Reservations at 1-800-221-2000 for more details.

TWA's travel partners operating under the Trans World Express® and Trans World Connectionsm brand names also will follow these procedures. TWE and TWC partners include Trans States Airlines, Chautauqua Airlines, Corporate Airlines, and Gulfstream International Airlines.

TWA flies approximately two million passengers per month on more than 825 daily flights to 100 destinations (including seasonal service) in North America, the Caribbean, Europe and the Middle East. TWA tickets are available for purchase through TWA Reservations at 1-800-221-2000, through travel agents, and through TWA's website at www.twa.com.
