So back to your recent experience....30 days out, did you request window or aisle, and (more importantly) did they give you that?
I requested window and they were able to confirm. I checked the SQ website by enrolling in KrisFlyer, and saw that the request was on my reservation.

Then you went online for check-in 48 hours before your connecting flight - like me (I think) that connecting flight that you took to get to the SQ flight (so more than 48 hours before the SQ flight departed) - correct? And you were able to switch to better seats (online, 48+ hours out) using the PNR code?
Both of my 1st and connecting flights were on SQ but I wasn't able to check in 48 hrs before the 1st flight, only 48 hrs prior to the connecting flight.

Were there a lot of seats available to pick from at that point?
Not a lot, but enough to get an average window seat more forward than aft.

Thanks very much for the info - this is exactly what I need to stop worrying about spending 30 hours stuck in a really bad seat
You're welcome. I'm in the air for 24+ hrs starting tomorrow HKG-SIN-FRA-JFK. Good luck to you!

EDIT TO ADD: One last thing, UA booked the ticket using my first name AND middle initial - without spaces - for my given name. Try this if you have problems OLCI using only your first name.
