For "ordinary" stuff (not including trip specific special items like sports equipment):

Carryon: duffel, backpack, or messenger bag (fits in small or oddly shaped overhead or underseat spaces more easily)

Checked: softsided suitcase, usually 22" (rarely)

A lot of people I know bring 26"+ suitcases for the same warm weather weekend trips that I do with a small carryon.
