Seating family together on nearly full flight

If I buy 4 tickets [2 adult + 2 children] on a flight that's so full that only single seats show up in the seat map, what happens?

I don't think that the children should be separated from an adult, so I assume that I should not reserve separate seats, but instead I should wait until the assign seats at the airport.

Is this a safe strategy?
