Recently flew FCO-ORD in J. FCO was a madhouse with long lines, hot and muggy, crowded, etc. By the time got through security, no time for the lounge. Any water bought inside security was confiscated at the gate area. Another wait inside the hot gate area. By the time, we boarded, I was very thirsty. I went up to an FA who was watching passengers board and politely asked for a glass of water. Was told that we "will do beverage service in a few minutes". Then went to the head FA (?) working in the galley and received the same message, rather rudely. Spotted the tray of glasses already filled with water/OJ/champagne. Helped myself to two glasses of water. The FA was none too happy but it made the point. The in-flight service pretty much matched the initial experience.
