Thank you SpaceBass for the suggestion.
It looks like I can connect. When I do the telnet thing I get a return:

220 Phantom.gear3.com ESMTP sendmail ready (gear 3 is my ISP provider whose servers the email goes thru), so I'll try Thunderbird. I appreciate the help. I know just enough to be dangerous
