You're exactly right
I was on YVR-DFW with a stop in DEN (same flight number), and they had left it in DEN for a night with a reason being: they had to rescan it through an x-ray machine twice
I do however have to admit that when it was delivered on the next flight the next morning, it came out the first on the carousel.
