Which airline did you book your ticket with and what restrictions did the ticket come with? ( as maybe you could get specific advice on that airline's forum) ie BA or United

I would agree with Annandaler that if you cancel or not show for the outbound flight then the whole ticket will be invalid.

The problem is August is a popular travel time and fares will be expnsive for example I looked at LHR-SFO ( o/w on 15th August for £640 ; a return from LHR is £797 non stop or £645 via DTW on NW)
