Brightly coloured glazed tiles are found in many properties within Thailand including at least 3 other Starwood Properties.
Phuket : I did check out the Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket, and yes you are correct I dont like it. I dont go to Phuket for a view of a former mining lake though some of the newer rooms (not suites/villas) are quite nicely furnished. However some of the older villas/suites are quite worn. As far as Phuket is concerned, I do feel very much at home at the Hilton though its not up to the level of luxury (and price) of the JW Marriott.
The LC properties in Thailand are quite disappointing. Nowhere close to the Sheraton Imperial KL or St Regis Beijing interms of "luxury".
SGS :Regarding the turquoise tiles, theres nothing wrong with bright coloured tiles. Its just that it doesnt match with those cheap marble on the floor. I have seen the same tiles used in other hotels and homes, and it looked great. I dont know what actually went wrong there, but generally thai interior designers are quite good with colours.
