Maybe it isn't typical, but here's my experience.

I was checking in at a kiosk early one day and asked the counter agent about standby. The agent told me there was a $25 fee to get on the earlier flight. The agent standing next to him looked over at me, noticed that I was sliding my platinum card, and said to him, "oh, he doesn't have to pay." Then, she turned to me and said, "Here, let me get you on that flight." Which she did, for no charge.

Of course, I've also had luck getting fare differences waived at the counter, so maybe I'm just lucky.
