I do not know about ground staff- but crew members need to undergo a 10 year background check, fingerprints, etc before obtaining a crew ID card. Having said that I feel ALL staff should go through a security check.
I think I feel the same way you do. Its OK if they have an expedited "quick-pass" type system, but as long as its still a check to make sure they are not going postal on that particular day and planning to bring a bomb in their carryon or something like that.
