If the above advice makes sense and you wanted to stay somewhere on the way then set out early, here is a hotel/motel on the edge of Sydney. I haven't been there a long time but it is at The Crossroads where suburbia (and the M5 motorway) ends and the Hume begins.

A GPS which alerts you to fixed speed cameras might be nice to have, too.
