If you are looking for a really out of the way destination in the neighbourhood, try nearby Rodrigues Island. They had their own version of the dodo - the solo (extinct now also). They have an airstrip but no idea about air service (came by boat). Nightlife in Port Mathurin is a little slow but it's a very unique place to visit and the locals are friendly.
