So ... they did. Me, EXP spouse, and several other AA elites who were on the same cancelled flight. A total of over 50 passengers.

According to America West's (okay okay, US Air's) computer system, we're all terrorists. Every last one of us is a full-fare, walk-up, last-minute, one-way ticket. Therefore .... more than 50 SSSS's that morning.

Tell me ... does that make any sense at all, to treat top-tier passengers from another airline like dirt, just because a flight was cancelled? Is there any rightness whatsoever to this process?

Where' the sanity? Who's gonna be the first employee to step up and say "I refuse to participate in this malarkey ... Stop The Madness!"?
Technically, it has NOTHING to do with AA or US. The CO agents who handle US at SAT have NO FRICKIN' IDEA how to use US's computer system. I really wish that US would hire their own agents at SAT. I really like the CO agents when they handle CO flights. But, honestly, they have no earthly clue when they get on US's computer.

In a similar situation a couple of years ago (US cancelled their flight), CO's agents not only managed to get me "SSSS"ed, but also managed to cancel my return reservation!! Fortunately, I realized the CO agent had done something stupid, spoke with US immediately upon arrival, and got a PAPER FIM (the CO agent messed it up so badly that the IS people couldn't fix it).
