I second the idea to buy an adapter before you leave home and listen to everything with a nicer headset. You can use any type of headset you have, but without the adapter you will only get sound out of one side. If you have Bose headsets they should have come with the adapter, one of the nice side perks of those beauties.
I am old school and still comp drinks and headsets with extensive delays; guess I've been lucky that I've never been called on the carpet about it. I just write PR on the explanation line. I've also seen several agents that will give us a voucher no questions asked. If a f/a has been in trouble with this issue in the past then I don't blame them for not doing it again, I'm sure my day will come.
