Philippines is a great idea. I agree with avoiding Mindanao. It's probably one of the most dangerous places in the world for Americans right now, aside from the Middle East. Davao is pretty safe. Aside from that I'd stay off that island. Boracay, Cebu and Bohol come to mind as great places to spend some time in Phils. ^
