Check in policy question (in relation to 5th night free award.)

I'm planning on spending 4 nights at a Sheraton using points. I thought about how it was unfortunate that I wouldn't be able to take advantage of the 5th night free award, but I can't stay an extra day. Then I realized that I would be arriving early in the morning (around 8am) and it would be great to be able to check in right away, as opposed to waiting until 2pm. So I was wondering what would happen If I were to make the reservation for 5 nights, beginning a day earlier, but didn't check in until the following morning? How long does the hotel hold your reservation before considering you a no show and charging you a penalty?
