One curious thing I noticed, most of the time there was a low-pitched beep when a pass was scanned, but occasionally a series of high-pitched beeps. What is the significance of this?

I asked about the high pitched bleeps the other week. The machine makes that noise for ticketed passengers - it's meant to remind the agent to pull the paper ticket apart from the boarding pass (the agent's comment ... 'as if we don't know what TICKETED means!')
I think the bleeps sound like Mario grabbing coins in Nintendo's original Super Mario Brothers. When I first heard them I looked around to see who was playing video games!
