I just saw these for the first time Saturday--had my boarding pass scanned by one in LBB, DAL, and AUS.

One curious thing I noticed, most of the time there was a low-pitched beep when a pass was scanned, but occasionally a series of high-pitched beeps. What is the significance of this?
