CO reward ticket on Skyteam metal. Can the partner airline change the routing?

I have a CO reward ticket for AeroMexico flights AM58 and AM57 TIJ-NRT-TIJ. An interesting flight and all should be well. But....... AM58 and the return AM57 is a direct flight, going MEX-TIJ-NRT. I only need the TIJ-NRT portion. CO international reservations swear up and down that they can only book that flight as a reward MEX-NRT. They say TIJ-NRT can only be booked as a revenue ticket and can not be booked as an reward ticket period, regardless of reward fare bucket availability. There are plenty of reward seats available TIJ-NRT on any other Skyteam airline. CO just claims they cannot book them. So the solution they offered is first I fly TIJ-MEX to get on AM58 there. That then flies MEX-TIJ so now I am back in TIJ where I started in the first place and can continue AM58 from there. It ticketed that way but I go to Mexico City and back for no reason other than that is the only way CO can figure out how to book it. Personally I think there is something screwy in CO's reward booking system but multiple agents on multiple calls have been unable to book it any other way and I have pretty much given up on getting it ticketed any other way by CO.

So..... as it stands I am ticketed flying TIJ-MEX-TIJ-NRT and back when I really just want to go TIJ-NRT. I really do not want to go to MEX and back for no reason so if someone could just drop the TIJ-MEX-TIJ segments off the front I would be very happy. If CO cannot fix it, does AM have the ability to make changes to an itinerary that is ticketed by CO, since it is AM flights after all and it would certainly be in AM's best interest???? If AM sees the logic in NOT filling one of their seats with my butt TIJ-MEX-TIJ for no reason at all, can AM bypass the CO reservation by simply dropping the first two flights even though it is ticketed by CO or are their hands bound by fact that it is not 'their' ticket, only their flights and any changes must be handled by CO???
