These new fangled intelligent polymer coatings are wizard. I imagine the solution for the 787 windows is to control the opacity of the window. Only a few percentage points of opacity needs to be applied in order to diffuse the worst direct sunlight whilst vision remains virtually un-compromised.

It is a good ten years now since my first encounter with this technology. Then, our ambition was to use it in glass lifts for a certain Megabank building in E14. The design intent for the lift cars was that the opacity of the glass walls would adjust in response to the car's motion. All tremendously exciting but alas, prohibitively expensive at the time. That novel concept never left the drawing board.
