You are correct that Southwest does not have a per-piece carry-on weight limit. Naturally the overhead bin has a weight limit. This should not stop flight attendants from at least trying to check carry-on items that are "too heavy" (without the benefit of an arbitrary limit).

That is, would Southwest let you carry on a bag of lead whose weight equals the entire overhead bin's limit? I guess they could, and risk crushing the head of whoever sits under it.

I looked up Delta, and they do have a carry-on weight limit of 40 pounds:
