I don't think WN kept one eye open in California while Shuttle by United operated. I think they kept both eyes open and pummeled UA until they pulled the Shuttle by United concept altogether.

Now Southwest has something like 60-70% of the intra-California market.

They've also done the same thing to US Airways in Florida and at BWI.
