A good number of times the flight deck has no idea what number for takeoff, or when the aircraft will takeoff will be until actually getting in line. ATC can be so overwhelmed at times, that the pilots don't even get a chance to ask until they are closer to the runway. Hindsight is always a nice vision to have in these situations.
