Happened to me once. First int'l flight LGW - DFW - family of 4 on holiday and mom wanted my window seat in J. I politely declined, since I did not care for aisle (center section) seat. I did counter offer that I would consider an upgrade to first - especially since it was my birthday. AAgent said thanks for your time and went about her work.
