How are Qantas to there Platinum members? are they "generous" as in go to all efforts, or because shes not actually flying will they not help?
Also do you think the upgrade will be successful?
Thanks for your views.
Hi newsie2007 and welcome to FT!
No problems with your mom requesting the upgrade for you and her status (plat) will attach to the request in terms of priority for upgrades, not yours.
So on the face of it you are in for a better chance than those who are gold silver or bronze!
However, the upgrade request will come after Chairman's Lounge card holders (but you have to wonder how many of those are in economy anyways).
The Y9 J9 is not necessarily indicative of your chances of success. The LAX market is a high yeild route for QF and often full at high prices. The difference between Qantas (and many other Asian carriers) is that an empty seat does not mean they will fill them with upgrades: a flight will go out with empty biz seats rather than being given away to upgrades. QF does this to protect revenue in those cabins (otherwise everyone would just hold out to get upgraded).
If you get the upgrade you should be able to have a look on the 'manage my booking' site about 12 hours before departure... however at this stage I would be prepared for a trip in economy.
If there are seats for upgrade, then there has been some debate as to how they are allocated. Certainly the earlier each 'class' of frequent flyer registers plays a part - ie the first platinum to request the upgrade will get it over a plat who has requested the upgrade at the last minute... (but a plat who has requested at the last minute outranks a gold who may have applied three months out). If two plats have requested at the same time, then who knows... it may come down to something like surname (who comes first) or how much of a plat you are (those who fly more may be given priority).
