I've not checked bags in the past 5 years, but it appears the big new machines are right in the lobby at LAS for checked luggage. You drop of your baggage at those units before going to the gates.

I'm not sure if you're allowed to lock them after they are scanned. I don't believe the passenger is permitted to contact the luggage after it goes thru the unit.
