From the MR Reward Guide:
"Marriott Rewards, Terms and Conditions
POINT EARNING
4. Points will not be earned for a Marriott stay made prior to the date the member's application was processed as shoen in our records. No retroactive credit will be given."
Not to question that it happened as you posted - anything's possible.
However, my response was consistent with the published rules.
