It seems AA does not really want to expand Asia even though they say otherwise. Look at others now compared to AA. The pilots should not be a factor now as by then a new contract will be in place most likely.
Maybe the issue is that if they apply for a route they can't currently serve, it gives the pilots extra leverage. They can serve ORD-PEK under the current agreement, so they can apply for it without giving the pilots the ability to hold something publicly announced or officially applied-for over the execs' heads and risking another DFW-PEK-style embarrassment.
