You may be overstating the situation. Each point earned expires on its own individual 12-month cycle. So, the points that were earned on 10/8/01 will expire on 10/8/02, but the other points will remain intact until they are 12 months old. I don't mean to minimize the loss of points expiring, but it's not like all 14 points will expire on 10/8, unless for some reason they all were earned on that date.
