Hey! Really great recommendations and comments here, folks! Thanks a lot! I think this really gives us a leg up in hunting down some haunts. To be clear, I think we would prefer to go places to experience new york and its uniqueness (be it a dive or a $300 bottle minimum club) rather than something like an Irish pub that you can really find pretty much anywhere.

Hope that helps.
Tremendous post overall-thanks -- very helpful and insightful - but one question - what does "looking like you're going out for the night" mean by NYC standards? The ladies among us have already expressed a disdain for high-heels if there is going to be a lot of walking and/or dancing (as there usually is when bar and club hopping) Do you mean jackets for men, cocktail dresses (and heels) for women?

What will "as long as its not jeans" get us, and can we go with something somewhere in-between this standard and the one above? We've already decided end that we will do pubs and bars one night and lounges/clubs on another to address the clothing disparity issue, so hopefully the heels problem will work itself out.

But, no, I don't like pubs very much. I like pricing out the riffraff in my 30-something middle age.
I get where you all are coming from, and appreciate the clarifications. I think we are looking for a mix. We will certainly be checking out the spectrum. Love the classic dives but there is also something to be said about the different vibes/atmospheres you get when pay for it.
