Indeed, the 6K discount is the best argument I could find against dropping the card after the first year because of the annual fees.
However, in the fine print in the brochure they sent, in the section for the offer, it said at the end: "This offer is valid for travel completed between October 31, 2006 and December 31, 2007. Qualifying tickets must be booked between October 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007." I hope they have extended it. Would agree that they need something of value to incentivize renewals.
Would also wonder what fallback offers, if any, they'd have if people called wanting to cancel. I s'pose you could downgrade to the platinum card, but I dunno if US Bank can offer a deal like they do with the SkyPass blue card, where it's 1 mile per $2 spent but no annual fee.
Seems like all the junk fees and amounts read like a laundry list of "worst practices" by the credit card industry (including universal default, which should be illegal).
