I'm sure there are plenty of people besides me who would dread the idea of driving the Long Island Expressway to then deal with NYC traffic.

ISP is somewhat of an ordeal when your destination is NYC. The cab/van/whatever from ISP to the train station costs $5 ($7?) then the ride (and fare) on the LIRR. Here is the link for the Ronkonkoma timetables. An hour between trains in mid-day and an hour ride can add up to a long trip.
