Yes, but they don't lay-off pilots during the winter season. They're not seasonal employees like at Target or Best Buy. Somehow they've managed during other times. And I don't think the rate of attrition is all that high, but I could certainly be wrong. All of this leads me to believe that something unexpected came up that crew scheduling couldn't anticipate.
As previously noted, all furloughed pilots have been recalled.
The current issues are a result of a summer schedule with a large increase in international flying, poor weather and a general shortage of pilots (including lower reserve levels). It should be noted that schedules and staffing levels are
completely solely the responsibility of managment.

Then I guess you have little basis to your claim that the cancellations are because pilots aren't showing up for work (as opposed to other factors).
