In response to questions on this, the reasoning is that high heat can cause nylon, rayon and other synthetics to melt onto your skin. The other factor is that generally natural fibers "breathe" better so you're generally more comfortable.

I usually don't wear shorts on planes but did on my recent trip on WN to Orlando. I had plenty of company. Generally, I go with layers because sitting on the tarmac with sun shining on the plane and no air circulation is guaranteed to trigger a hot flash or two.
