I wore shorts on a weekend PHL -> LHR -> GOT flight a few years back. My luggage was lost on the BA -> SAS transfer in London. I almost had to get new clothes for my business meeting the next day, but my luggage arrived later that evening.

Since then, I'll still wear shorts on the flight... but I make sure I have a change of clothes in my carry-on.
