As to the "conference" seating, I read somewhere last year that the FAA has mandated that Southwest reconfigure their 737s to conventional seating by the end of 2000.

Southwest's route structure is not holding them back, but it does hold back a lot of their staunch supporters from flying them as often as they'd like to.
