MP credit for student ticket on AC?

So, my younger brother took a trip to Europe to celebrate graduating from college, and as a good brother I told him to make sure to credit it to a ff account. He ended up purchasing tickets through STA Travel, and flying LAX-YYZ-YHZ-LHR-YHZ-YYZ-LAX, all on AC metal, and attempted to credit it to his MP account.

However, when he's called MP and asked where his miles are, apparently someone told him that since he got the ticket through a student travel agency, they weren't mileage eligible.

Now, I asked him for his boarding passes to try to discern which fare class he was in, but they don't seem to show that info. However, from this thread, it seems that AC doesn't have any fares at all that earn zero miles, and on the trans-atlantic legs, no fares that earn less than 100% miles.

Any idea what the real story is?
