Interesting, this in combo with a single engine taxi pretty clearly explains what the OP observed. From the info I've very quickly gathered, part of the role of the inlet guide vanes is to support the shaft. I would assume that all jet engines must have a stationary structure somewhere in them for shaft support, but the unique (or unusual) thing with the JT-8D is that it is forward of all the compressor blades.
